JEE or NEET? How to choose after Class 10
The short answer
Choose based on which subject you enjoy and are good at: Maths or Biology, and which career you can picture yourself doing for years. JEE leads to engineering and needs strong Maths. NEET leads to medicine and needs strong Biology. Physics and Chemistry are common to both. Try to decide by the start of Class 11, because preparing seriously for both is very difficult.
Start with the subjects
Both exams test Physics and Chemistry from Classes 11 and 12. The difference is the third subject:
- JEE tests Mathematics, and its Physics is very maths-heavy too. If you enjoy solving problems, working with numbers and figuring out how things work, JEE is likely a good fit.
- NEET tests Biology, which carries half the paper's marks (90 of 180 questions). If you enjoy understanding the human body, living things and how diseases work, and you're comfortable with a lot of reading and memory, NEET is likely a good fit.
A simple test: look at your Class 9 and 10 marks and, more importantly, how you feel doing Maths homework versus reading a Biology chapter. Enjoyment matters, because you'll be studying that subject intensely for two years.
Think about the career, not just the exam
| JEE (engineering) | NEET (medicine) | |
|---|---|---|
| Main courses | B.Tech / B.E. in fields like computer science, electronics, mechanical, civil | MBBS, BDS, and AYUSH courses such as BSMS (Siddha), BAMS and BHMS |
| Length of study | Usually 4 years | MBBS is about 5.5 years including internship, and most doctors then do a postgraduate degree |
| Work | Technology, design, research, management, many industries | Patient care, hospitals, clinics, medical research |
| Where it leads | IITs, NITs, IIITs and many state and private colleges | Government and private medical colleges through national and state counselling |
Medicine is a long commitment with a lot of study even after MBBS. Engineering offers a faster start to working life and a very wide range of fields. Neither is "better". The right one is the one that suits the student.
Questions to ask before deciding
- Which subject do I enjoy more, Maths or Biology, even when it gets hard?
- Can I picture myself working in a hospital, or in technology and engineering?
- Am I ready for a longer study path (medicine), or would I prefer to start working sooner (engineering)?
- Am I choosing this myself, or because of friends, relatives or pressure?
What about taking both (PCMB)?
Some students take Physics, Chemistry, Maths and Biology in Class 11 to keep both options open. This is possible, but both exams need deep preparation, and splitting focus usually means doing neither as well as you could. If you're truly unsure, PCMB can help you decide during the first few months of Class 11. Most students do best by committing to one path early.
Common mistakes
- Choosing because a friend or cousin chose it.
- Picking NEET while finding Biology boring, or JEE while struggling with Maths.
- Delaying the decision until Class 12, which wastes valuable preparation time.
- Assuming only one outcome counts as success. Both exams open many good colleges and courses beyond the top few names.
Frequently asked questions
Can I switch from JEE to NEET, or NEET to JEE, later?
Switching early in Class 11 is manageable, since Physics and Chemistry are common. After that, it gets harder, because you'd need to catch up on a whole subject. Decide as early as you can.
Is NEET only for MBBS?
No. NEET scores are also used for BDS and AYUSH courses such as BSMS (Siddha), BAMS (Ayurveda) and BHMS (Homeopathy), among others.
Which exam is harder, JEE or NEET?
They're hard in different ways. JEE Advanced has very demanding problem-solving, while NEET has intense competition for a limited number of government MBBS seats and needs very high accuracy. The "harder" exam is usually the one that doesn't match your strengths.
When should preparation start?
Ideally at the start of Class 11. See our guide on when to start JEE and NEET preparation.
